Properties and advantages of the KEIM silicate paint

q       Base of the KEIM mineral paints

The base of the unique quality of the KEIM mineral paints are 100% natural mineral resources : liquid silica is used as binder (with a structure and hardness equal to rock-crystal), with an addition of mineral fillers and inorganic colour pigments.

q       Petrifaction

The principle of the silicate painting technique is founded on the petrifaction of the mineral paint in the substrate.  Because of this, a solid, mineral and insoluble linking of the paint with the support (renders & plasters, concrete, bricks, natural stone etc.) will be formed.

q       Vapour diffusion capacity

The high vapour diffusion capacity of the silicate paints, guarantees an unrestricted diffusion of moisture into the open air.  Consequently, no moisture concentrations will be formed between the paint layer and the substrate : flaking, peeling or cracking of the paint is impossible.  The support will remain sane.  Through time, the breathing capacity will be totally maintained.

q       Anti-fungal and bactericidal

The pure inorganic composition of the KEIM silicate paints, and the high alkalinity and vapour diffusion capacity, inhibit condensation and at the same time the growth of mildew (fungi) and bacteria.  This property guarantees a clean and hygienic paint layer and consequently healthy conditions in KEIM-painted rooms.

q       Non flammable

Contrary to dispersion and silicone resin paints, the KEIM mineral paints are non-flammable, even in a welding flame.  In case of fire, the paint layers will not be destroyed, and due to the mineral composition of the paint, no toxic gasses will be released by the effect of the heat.

q       Thermal regulation

KEIM mineral paints have a microcrystalline structure.  This fabric will reflect light and heat.    In arid climates (e.g. in deserts) the thermal expansion of the substrate will be considerably reduced by the reflection, and consequently cracking of the paint will be avoided.

q       Unsurpassed colour fast

Because of the principle of petrifaction, the colour of the KEIM paints will not be influenced by harsh weather conditions, neither by strong UV radiation.  Even after tenths of years it is possible to repaint in the same colour.  Original 19th century murals (for example the town hall in Schwyz, Switzerland) are the impressive real-life examples.

q       Resistance against acids

KEIM mineral paints will not be influenced by the action of acids.  The alkalinity of the KEIM paints will not change, even after long-standing affection.  This property contrasts sharply with the more neutral lime paints, which can be totally corroded by the action of acids.

KEIM paints are an active protection against corrosion by acids or sulphur.

q       Compatibility with all mineral building materials

Because of their mineral structure, Keim silicate paints are closely related to mineral building materials, both chemically and physically.  The equal expansion coefficient restricts flaking, peeling and cracking.  Renders and plaster, concrete and masonry will preserve their mineral appearance by the application of KEIM paints.

q       Ecologically sound

In a techno-environmental view, KEIM mineral paints are trouble-free, as the paints are composed of mineral ingredients, occurring naturally in the subsoil.  Among these belong quartz and feldspar (the components of ordinary sand) and mineral 100% natural pigments.  The liquid silica serves as a binder.  Also the technical production of KEIM paints is ecologically sound, as well as the manufacturing as the application.  Consequently, these paints are non-noxious for the manufacturers and craftsmen, and no polluting components, like solvents, will be released.  The natural “solvent of the KEIM silicate paints is water.  Therefore, the nature of KEIM is environmentally safe.  KEIM paints are odourless and breathing, the most important conditions for a healthy building and life.   reukloos en volledig ademend, de belangrijke voorwarden voor gezond bouwen en wonen.

q       270 standardised colours

KEIM mineral paints are available in more then 270 standard, historical and natural stone colours, by which multiple, and totally adjusted colour designs are possible.  Other colours can also be designed on request.  Because samples are kept of each colour, an exact reproduction can be guaranteed.   The many outstanding characteristics of KEIM mineral paints, will give an application a significant longer life span, compared to other organic paint systems.

Practical painting techniques with KEIM mineral paints

q       Preparation of an irregular substrate

Difficult substrates, like stripped surfaces, reparations of renders or plasters, differences in the structure of the relief of a surface and cracks smaller then 0.5mm, are levelled with the KEIM KONTAKT bonding and undercoat layer.

q       Covering and preservation of the substrate

The structure of the surface will remain intact with all KEIM products.  KEIM PAINT impregnates the pores of the support, and consequently the superficial fabric will be visible.

q       “Lazur” techniques

A semi-transparent technique, which preserves the original structure of the support.  The KEIM paint will also impregnate the pores of the substrate.

q       Special painting techniques

It is possible to imitate marbles and natural stones with the KEIM mineral paints.  For example, the “Alten Museum” in Berlin is marbled with KEIM PURKRISTALAT.

q       Restoration of monuments

Architectonical style elements, like frameworks, can be treated with KEIM paints, matching the original colours and plasticity of the classic styles.

Murals of historical and new buildings produced with KEIM mineral paints, are characterised by a high durability against weathering, disintegration and pollution.  By the mineral character of the KEIM paints, closely related with the properties of the substrate, a harmonic uniformity is created with the historical building parts.

q       Modern murals

The preservation of monuments and historic buildings is not anymore the only working domain of KEIM.  Monumental murals like the optical illusion of the Hilton Hotel in Fontainebleu, Miami, show the extensive possibilities of the KEIM silicate paints.
